Memorial Day Message

This message was delivered as part of the Natoma/Paradise Memorial Day Festivities.

In the Name of Jesus! AMEN!

Throughout the Old Testament, the Lord is constantly commanding His people to ‘tell the next generation.’

‘Tell the next generation how the Lord brought you out of the land of Egypt through the Red Sea waters on dry ground.’

‘Tell the next generation how the Lord provided manna and quail for you in the wilderness.’

‘Tell the next generation how the Lord drove out your enemies from before you when you came into the Promised Land.’

‘Tell the next generation about all that the Lord God has done for you.’

The danger in not telling the next generation is of course, that the next generation would forget all that the Lord had done for their forefathers; that the next generation would never know how the blessings and benefits that they enjoy today came to be theirs.  If the next generation does not know where all of these good and gracious blessings came from, then how could they properly celebrate and give thanks for them?

Over time, Israel did forget.  Israel did fail to tell the next generation of what the Lord had done for them, in bringing them out of Egypt through the Red Sea waters; in leading them through the wilderness and into the Promised Land.  And because Israel did not tell the next generation, the next generation never knew what the Lord had done for their
forefathers.  And because the next generation did not know the great blessings of God, they were doomed to lose those blessings, because they were not told.

Days like today, are days specially set aside to tell the next generation about what the Lord has done for us in this place.  These cemeteries serve as reminders of what the Lord has done for this nation: raising up servants who answered the call of the government to protect and defend the blessings that God has given to us in this land.

And while salvation is not achieved through service to county, no matter how brave; God most certainly did use them so that the way of salvation in Jesus Christ might be open to us in a land that is free from tyranny and oppression.

And that is what is at stake if we do not tell the next generation of what the Lord has done for us.  Tyranny and oppression are lurking, waiting for the day when the blessings that God has given to us do not seem so special anymore.  And so we must remember what
those who have gone before us have sacrificed in order that we might be free.  And we must remember to tell the next generation why days like today are important, so that they too might know what God has done for them; and so that they too might tell the next generation.

In the Name of Jesus! AMEN!
