For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. – 2 Corinthians 5:1
That is the theme verse for our Vacation Bible School this year titled: Amazing Desert Journey: Where Jesus Leads Us Home from Concordia Publishing House. VBS will be June 4-8, from 8:30AM-11:30AM.
I am convinced that the greatest invention for cars after air-conditioning is turn by turn directions offered through a variety of services, in my case On-Star. I do not use it much around here, but when I am in Topeka or Wichita or on vacation, than I am glad that I have it. For in these unfamiliar places, where I do not know where the roads lead or how to get from one side of town to the other, I can get directions to wherever I need to go at the push of a button.
Of course, On-Star and other services like it, only work in the car. Once out of the car, you may need to rely on a street map to get to your destination.
It is hard to imagine our life on earth as a journey, but it is. And on this journey through this world, there are going to be times where we need directions and assistance in finding our way. Now you can stop and ask for directions from others, get their opinion on which way you should turn; but that only works so much as you trust the person giving you directions. Many times, Satan will try to turn you down the wrong path, which at the time, may in fact look like the right path to take. There are many false guides in the world today who are pointing down that wrong path; so many that it is easy to become confused as to which one is the right one.
Fortunately for us, we do have a guide who we can trust to give us the right directions through this world; someone who knows all of the tricks that the devil will play on us, someone who has come and walked the ground of this world Himself. Jesus Christ is our one true guide through the world, and He will not lead us wrong.
While Satan is pointing to the sins of the flesh that overtake us, Jesus is pointing us to Holy Baptism, where those sins are washed away.
While Satan is pointing down the road that leads to gluttony and drunkenness, Jesus is pointing to His table where we find His body and blood given to sustain us on this earthly journey.
While Satan is pointing to lies and deception, Jesus is pointing to His Word which is the Truth.
While Satan is pointing us toward the road that leads to hell and destruction, Jesus is pointing us to the road that leads to heaven and eternal life.
Because at the end of a long journey, you are going to be tired, and some of the supplies and provisions that you took with you are going to be wore out. The promise that Jesus offers to us at the end of our earthly journey is that He will refresh us. Jesus will take these old worn out earthly bodies and give us new and glorified bodies that do not show the wear and tear of our journey on earth.
We ask that you pray for our Vacation Bible School this year, that those who attend would see that on this world, one needs a guide to get through the troubles and pitfalls that they will encounter on this journey of life, and that guide is not the false prophets of Satan, but rather the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life: Jesus.
God Bless! Pastor Schmidt
