How will this be, since I am a virgin? – St. Luke 1:34
Mary’s question is a valid one. After all, virgins are not supposed to be found with child; it is scientifically impossible.
And yet it will be.
It will be because God says that it will be. It will be because God declares it to be.
Perhaps you have the same question when you hear the words spoken that ‘In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’
How will this be, since I am a poor, miserable sinner?
Again a valid question. How can sins just be taken away like that? How can those simple words spoken by an imperfect man in church give you the certainty of forgiveness, life and salvation? It is logically impossible.
And yet, it will be.
It will be because God says that it will be. It will be because that child that Mary bore will live a perfect life, only to die on a cross, so that the punishment for all your sins might be paid for by the shedding of His holy and precious blood, by His innocent suffering and death
And so now, when you hear the words spoken that your sins are forgiven, you can know it to be so, because God has declared it to be so. God says that the shedding of blood by Jesus will grant you forgiveness, life and salvation; and so it does.
If a virgin can be found with child, a sinner can be found forgiven. And today it is so; Mary will give birth to the Savior of the world; the same Savior who will suffer and die, so that you might stand before your Father in heaven and receive eternal life.
